What Are Collagen Fibers?
What Are Collagen Fibers?
Glowing, youthful, wrinkle-free skin, that’s the goal right?
When we are young, our bodies are full of the solutions we need to keep our skin look young and glowing. Part of the solution is held within the collagen fibers inside the body.
But what are collagen fibers and how do they help keep our skin hydrated, youthful and wrinkle-free?
Keep on reading to find out and learn how to boost and restore collagen in your body to give your skin it’s best look yet!
A Lesson in Collagen Fibers
We learned about the body in science and anatomy classes throughout the years. However, you will most likely remember the word COLLAGEN from commercials and skincare products. But what really is collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein found within the human body and is secreted mainly by the connective tissue cells. Molecules made of Collagen are bundled up to create long strands of fibrils called collagen fibers.
There are 16 types of collagen fibers, but types 1,2 and 3 take up the majority of collagen in the body. The collagen we are discussing is type 1 which is flexible and strong.
Research done at MIT found that gram for gram, collagen type 1 is stronger than steel! That is an incredible insight as to how important it is for your body and skin.
Collagen & Your Skin
Collagen is what helps create strong, firm skin. Collagen fibers are found within the dermis layer of the skin and form structures and networks that hold taut and smooth.
When we are younger collagen is produced normally and often. As we age, collagen production slows down and in females it decreases significantly after menopause.
During the aging process these structures of collagen fibers break down and deplete with not as much regeneration as when we were younger.
This breakdown of collagen fibers causes the loss of elasticity, and strength in the skin, therefore leading to wrinkles and sagging skin.
This is something that nobody wants to happen and thankfully there are ways to boost and restore collagen production in the skin!
How to Boost & Restore Collagen
There are quite a few ways to boost collagen and help your skin mostly return to its natural strong and elastic state. There’s no miracle cure, but there are many things that come close!
Taking care of your skin and being proactive with skincare at an early age will help you fight off signs of aging even more.
Foods High in Vitamin C
Certain foods rich in Vitamin C can be beneficial for Collagen reproduction such as:
Kale
Brussels Sprouts
Strawberries
Oranges
Yellow Peppers
Guava
Broccoli
Kiwi
Lemons
Skincare Facials & Peels
There are skincare products on the market that can also aid in boosting collagen production and helping the skin look fresh, youthful and smooth. There are Facials and Chemical Peel treatments specially created to help with collagen production and aging skin.
Benefits of Facials & Chemical Peels
Facials and Chemical Peels will hydrate your skin, smooth lines and wrinkles, neutralize free radicals that enter the skin from pollution and sun damage, and boost skin resiliency, strength and elasticity.
Typically a Dermaplane treatment is recommended before getting a Facial or Chemical Peel to allow the products to penetrate the skin more effectively and efficiently. If you don’t know what Dermaplaning is, read our latest blog, “What is Dermaplane?” to get an in-depth description of the treatment and process.
