What Is Dermaplaning?

What Is Dermaplane?

Are you always wondering how celebrities, singers and models always have the smoothest looking skin and flawless makeup? It’s not really a trick, it’s just great skincare and skincare treatments!

If you wear makeup, struggle with dry skin or dark facial hair, you will love what a Dermaplane treatment can do for you!

Your New Favorite Skincare Treatment

You’ve most likely heard about dermaplaning and you’ve seen the advertisements and billboards touting this procedure as the new popular skincare treatment. If you search “dermaplaning near me” you’ll find department and beauty stores pop up selling tiny razors and med spas promoting their treatments. But what exactly is dermaplaning and what does it do?

Dermaplaning a non-invasive exfoliating facial treatment that removes dead skin, hair and vellus hair or “peach fuzz” as we’ve known it as.

This treatment is performed by an esthetician who uses a surgical-grade scalpel (not a typical razor) to remove the peach fuzz and dead skin cells.

You will leave the treatment with soft, smooth skin and a glowing complexion!

Is Dermaplane Safe?

There are no chemicals used in this treatment and it is generally seen as safe overall when it comes to reactions, or issues with certain skin types.

It is recommended that if you have an acne breakout, cold sores or infection, to not receive this treatment due to possible spreading of infection or acne.

You might experience some redness after the treatment and some white heads appearing a few days later. But these are temporary side effects and the benefits your skin will reap far out way those small issues.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

The great news about dermaplaning is that every skin type can benefit from this treatment.

Vellus hairs, aka, peach fuzz traps oil and hair that can lead to acne breakouts, dull skin and clogged pores.

Benefits include:

Smooth skin

Brighter skin

Reduction of acne scars and other scars

Reduction in the appearance of wrinkles

Easier makeup application

Elimination of unsightly hairs and peach fuzz

Better penetration of serums, creams and oils into the skin

This treatment is also great for those with more sensitive skin who can’t handle harsher microdermabrasion treatments or chemical peels.

What to Expect During Treatment

When you go in for the treatment you should expect to be there for about 30 to 45 minutes.

Since this is a cosmetic treatment it is not covered by insurance and costs an average of $150-$250. It is recommended that you go every 4-6 weeks to get this treatment done. This is due to the fact that the skin will regenerate and shed more dead cells and vellus hairs will grow back.

Before dermaplaning begins your esthetician will cleanse your face and remove any makeup, oils, creams or serums you may have on. She will then take the blade and begin to remove the dead skin cells and hairs.

This treatment is usually performed prior to facials, micro-retinol treatments (see our latest post- How Micro-Retinol Benefits the Skin) other treatments because your skin will absorb products like oils, serums and creams more efficiently.

There are viral videos that show this process and some people say it is very satisfying to watch!

Myths and Misconceptions

Facial treatments should be performed by an experienced esthetician. There are DIYs for dermaplaning but those could lead to injury and permanent facial scarring if used incorrectly.

The Dermaplane razors that you see on the shelves are not the same as the ones used by professionals. These beauty counter razors will help remove facial hair and some peach fuzz but don’t go as deep as a surgical blade used by an esthetician.

Dermaplaning is not the same as shaving! Dermaplaning involves the exfoliation and removal of dead skin and vellus hairs using a surgical blade and shaving with a regular razor will just remove hairs and some peach fuzz.
